Electrolux EL500AZ Oxygen Ultra Air Purifier ~ Start Breathing Easy Again

Rate this post

The air quality in your home can affect your health in so many ways.  Poor air quality can lead to getting sick more frequently and can really do a number on your allergies.  If you don't have allergies, having poor air quality can actually help you to develop them.  Since you probably spend at least 1/2 of your day in your home, you should do all you can to try and breath cleaner indoor air.

This is where the Electrolux EL500AZ Oxygen Ultra Air Purifier comes in.  With this handy machine, you can dramatically reduce the level of dust, allergens and odors in your home and help create an inner sanctuary of health for your family.

I reviewed the Electrolux EL500AZ Oxygen Ultra Air Purifier, which retails for $299.99.  Right now though, you can purchase this on Amazon.com for only $243.65 with FREE SHIPPING!
I was very excited to have the opportunity to review the EL500AZ Oxygen Ultra Air Purifier from Electroluxfor several reasons.  First, the air quality here in Houston is usually pretty poor.  Between the frequent rains stirring up all sorts of mold, pollen and other allergens, and the constant pollution which comes from being the 4th largest city in the U.S., our air here could use some serious cleaning!

Next, I'm not sure whether or not Riley has inherited her father's allergies or not, but all outward appearances are leaning toward yes.  I wanted to install this Electrolux air purifier in her bedroom so as to insure she breathes in well-cleaned air while she naps during the day and sleeps at night.  Being only 20 months old, she still sleeps over 12 hours per day and so I figured she would receive the most benefit from the EL500AZ if it was placed in her room.

The Electrolux EL500AZ works well in large rooms, up to 405 square feet or about a 20' x 20' room.  This was surprising because I've seen many units costing the same or even more which cover a lot less area.  The EL500AZ  has three automatic fan speeds as well as a TURBO fan speed which can be selected manually for maximum air circulation.

What's great about this air purifier is that there is a Auto/Environmental Mode where you can basically "set it and forget it".  When using this mode, the purifier will automatically cycle through three fan speeds to compensate for increased/decreased air contaminants, such as pet odors, insecticides, cosmetics or aerosol sprays.  This auto mode ensures that your air purifier will only run as hard as it needs too, saving both electricity and wear and tear on the filters too.

I was a little confused as to where to place this unit in Riley's room for the instructions stated that it should be placed at least 7 feet away from equipment such as televisions and radios.  That wasn't a problem.  The next part was.  The instructions said to place the unit at least 2 feet away from the wall.

Now, Riley has a fairly small bedroom and if I placed it 2 feet away from the wall, the air purifier would definitely be in the way.  The confusing part came when I was looking at the instruction manual and the first full-colored picture in the manual shows a family with the unit placed right against their living room wall.  Hmm...  I carefully inspected the back of the EL500AZ and noticed that there were no vents or anything, so I went ahead and put the unit a few inches away from a wall in Riley's room.

The air purifier was extremely easy to set up.  Simply open the front cover and remove some of the packing tape used to keep the item secure during shipping.  Then, take the HEPA filter and charcoal filter out of the packaging and reinsert back into the machine.  DONE!  Plug it in and presto, your air starts to be filtered in 3 stages: First, the carbon filter reduces powerful odors and other particles such as dust, mold and cigarette smoke.

Next, the HEPA filter captures airborne pollutants and removes 99.97% of dust, pollen, pet dander and other pollutants 0.3 microns large.  Finally, the PlasmaWave neutralizes and freshens the air by generating both positive and negative ions to create plasma clusters which instantly neutralize viruses, bacteria, chemical vapors and other odors in the air.

The neat thing about the EL500AZ air purifier is that it actually has a Quiet Operation mode whereby the bright blue lights on the front of the machine are dimmed and the unit silences down to a whisper (26 Decibels) so as not to disturb your sleep.  It also has a sort of holster for the small square remote control on the top of the machine.  This way you are sure to always know where the remote control is. The maintenance costs on the Electrolux Oxygen Ultra Air Purifier are relatively low too.

The HEPA filter should be replaced every year and the charcoal filter should be replaced every 3 months.  I found both the HEPA filter and a one-year's supply of charcoal filters online for $79.99.  The good thing is that the Electrolux EL500AZ actually comes with 4 charcoal filters and 1 HEPA filter, so it will be at least a year before you have to replace them.  This unit also has a Filter Indicator Light on the front of the display panel, so you will know exactly when to replace your filters.  This way you don't accidentally do it too soon or not soon enough and compromise the quality of your air.

Riley, being only 20 months old, can't really tell me whether she feels better since the Electrolux EL500AZ has been installed in her room.  What my nose can tell me though, is that this machine definitely works!  Riley's diaper pail is often pretty stinky at times and there always seems to be a hint of unpleasant odor to her room no matter if the diaper pail is clean or not.

Since using the Electrolux EL500AZ Oxygen Ultra Air Purifier, I've noticed that Riley's room smells clean and fresh and there's no longer that underlying odor to her room.  Whether or not Riley will have her father's allergies is still uncertain, but what is certain is that the air quality in her room is MUCH better thanks to the Electrolux EL500AZ!

Disclosure:  I received the EL500AZ Oxygen Ultra Air Purifier from Electrolux in order to facilitate my review. No other compensation was received. This product review is based on my own personal experiences with this item and is completely honest and objective.

  • I was so pleased to find your review of the Electrolux Oxygen Ultra Air Cleaner! I own the Electrolux Oxygen3 with PlasmaWave and have had it almost 2 years. I went to their website to order new filters today and saw this newer model. I had to check it out. I am considering purchasing this newer model now. It is more attractive than my black one, it covers a larger area, and the intake vents appear larger.
I do not have any problems with mine and am still very satisfied with the performance, however, I would love to find a machine that works this well and has a permanent filter! That would lower the maintenance cost to only the carbon filters. (A girl can dream, can't she? lol) As long as I am dreaming, I would also create a way to scent the outgoing air and have a built-in air freshener! I have actually used auto air fresheners that clip on the air vents.
The website doesn't say the HEPA filter for the new model is washable but linked sites do. I am guessing that you are to wash it periodically and replace it yearly? My HEPA filter is paper and NOT washable. Mine was advertised to last "approximately" a year. I spend around $100.00 every 6-9 months. That includes 1 HEPA Filter, 4 Carbon Filters, sales tax and shipping. It is worth the cost but if I could lower it, that would be great. I am a smoker (yes, I know better) and my daughter has always commented about the smell of cigarette smoke in the house. She says that she can tell a BIG difference since I purchased this machine. She is a smart mouthed teenager so that meant a lot coming from her!
Anyway, I googled the EL500AZ to try to find the user manual in hopes of learning the prices of replacement filters, info on washing the HEPA filter, etc. I clicked on your link first to read your review. It went straight to this review page.
I thought the same thing about the placement of mine! I believe my manual said to place away from wall because pollutants may discolor the wall near it. Believe me, IT WILL!! I first placed mine on the floor against the wall. My wall did get dirty because myself and ex-husband smoked in the house. The paint on the wall was nicotine colored around and behind the machine! It was nasty! I moved it. It would probably be fine in your Riley's room.
The demo for mine (and every other air cleaner I have ever seen) shows the machine placed on the floor. I am far from a scientist but I know smoke rises and at 46 years old, I am not on the floor when I smoke! I don't do any cooking on the floor either. lol. I placed my machine on a small table in a corner and have it angled so it is away from the wall.
I am sorry! I did not intend to type you a novel. I only meant to say that I thought it would be fine to have your air cleaner against the wall or up on a piece furniture and to ask you about the newer model. If you have a spare moment, would you please email me and let me know what you think about your machine since you have had it for a while? Would you recommend it to a friend (or in my case, a complete stranger)? Now that my novel is finished, I am going to check out the rest of your site!
Again, I am sorry! I hope you at least got a laugh from this.

    • Hi Robyn,

Thanks so much for stopping by! I really appreciate you taking the time to read my review. You're right...I went ahead and put the Electrolux against the wall in Riley's room and it worked just fine. I have to say that I would definitely still recommend it too, since now Riley's room no longer smells like a dirty diaper pail any longer. The only problem is that you do have to buy yearly replacement filters, which can add up over time. But if you don't mind that expense, then I definitely think this is a great product to purchase. Please let me know if you have any other questions or if I can help in any way. Have a great day!

  • I have the model too. I just recently replaced the filters when the red light appeared. However, I cant seem to get the red light to go off. Any ideas? Also, do you use 1 or 2 of the carbon filters in your units?

    • Hi there! Thanks so much for stopping by! I only use 1 of the carbon filters in my unit and it works great. Thanks so much for letting me know about the reset button. Hadn't had to do that yet, but now I know how to do it when I need to. Have a great weekend!

  • nevermind, I figured it out. Like any device there is a reset button right beside the light. You have to use a paper clip or something similar and press in and hold for 10 seconds.
