Kroger Buy 5 Save 5 PromotionThis year, I'm making 2013 all about my family's health and I've decided to lead by example.  Although we could definitely exercise more as a group, I'm mainly focused on making more nutritious choices at the supermarket.  I'm one of the worst when it comes to a healthy diet, for upon closer inspection, my own diet is loaded with unhealthy carbs and tons of refined sugar.

Of course, any time you start talking about an eating overhaul, other members of your family will naturally get a little nervous.  Is it possible to actually eat well using foods that still taste delicious?  Thankfully, my local Kroger grocery store has not only served up some great options for healthy snacks and meals, they've also served up a way to save a pretty penny when purchasing them.

Saving Money in 2013

Spending less and saving more money are among the top goals on typical New Year's resolution lists. Heavy holiday spending coupled with potential tax hikes from the fiscal cliff make these goals even more important in 2013. To help, here are 13 easy ways to save more in 2013.

1. Dine Out Less
Have you ever calculated how much eating out eats into your budget? In 2011, the average family dished out $2,620 for dining out. Year-end bank and credit card statement summaries should quickly show you how much you spent at restaurants this year. You'll likely be surprised to learn how much you can save by staying home.

South Beach Diet Wake Up CallFirst, let me start by saying this is not a product review and I've received no compensation or products pertaining to the South Beach Diet.  This post and all others soon to follow are merely descriptions of my journey towards a healthier lifestyle.  I will be turning 37 years old this year and am honestly ashamed at the foods I choose to put in my body each day.

Do you remember the kind of foods you ate when you were eighteen?  Plenty of fast food and sweets completely devoid of fruits and vegetables?  Well unfortunately, I still eat this way and I believe that it's finally caught up with me for good.  A few months ago, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease, an auto-immune disease of the thyroid.  Since then, I've been in and out of doctor's offices and hospitals getting test after test and opinion after opinion on how to proceed next.

If there's one thing I know from my days of studying Science, it's that sugar actually lowers your immune system and although Hashimoto's disease does have genetic roots, I personally believe that my high-sugar diet is to blame.  The more I contemplate and really think about what I eat each day, the more I realize that I'm probably a full blown sugar and carb addict at this point.

The Best Outdoor Activities for Families: Wintertime from author Rebecca P. Cohen,  is an inspiring collection of wintertime activities giving families an idea a day ranging from December through February, requiring little planning, no expertise and relatively little resources (time, cash, or patience!), no matter where you live.

Look for an Aerial Battle

At this time of year, the kids and I tend to notice small birds engaged in battle with a larger bird in the distance overhead. Many times, we see these amazing displays of nature when we are in the car, but it’s not limited to that context. Turf battle? A hawk hunting for newly hatched baby birds? We’re never sure what it’s about, but we see these aerial battles many times during the season. Keep watch on the sky; can you find one?
