There are a few key reasons that I find myself dreading Tuesday through Thursday nights these days. It seems to me that this show just couldn't be any longer or more drug out, than it already is. As a matter of fact, Idol seems to have perfected this art form..I mean does it really take 5 hours of programming per week to decide who the lackluster singers are and give them the boot? I thought football got a lot of airtime on TV, but Idol has to take the cake in that department. Secondly, as my readers may or may not know, karaoke is something that my husband and I really love to do. Before we became parents, you could find us out pretty much every weekend at the local karaoke bar. My husband actually runs a karaoke show once per week just for fun. We even had karaoke at our own wedding reception! So believe me when I tell you, that the talent on American Idol is pretty laughable to me.
I have a very hard time understanding how this show has combed the country and listened to tens of thousands of singers, only to come up with the top 24 that they have every year. This group of 24 should be the proverbial "cream of the crop", yet I promise you that I could go into any karaoke bar in Houston right this minute and find at least one person who is just as good, if not better, than this lot that Idol is touting as so talented. After the funny outtake shows at the beginning of the season, Idol is so painful to watch because there is not a lot of talent there. The show never seems to get good until close to the very end because of this.
Finally, the judges are getting more predictable and less interesting as time goes by. Paula used to always be a hoot to watch because you never knew how strung out and dingy she was going to be, which was interesting. Now, Paula is gone. Randy would usually wear some awfully loud outfit every week, but here lately, his wardrobe is pretty tame. Simon was still sort of a bright spot in the show, but even his harsh criticisms are becoming pretty predictable. So, at this point, if you're still even reading by now, you're probably asking yourself: "Okay, lady...then WHY ARE YOU STILL WATCHING THIS SHOW?"
That answer is very simple: I really love my husband and this is his favorite show on TV. One season, a few years back, I tried not to watch it with him and would go into another room while Idol was on and do other things. But, you could tell that it took a lot of the fun out of it for him, watching it alone. He had no one to chat with about all the pitchiness, the commentaries and even some of the star-studded moments. I want him to enjoy his show, even if I don't, so we compromise...I can say all the negative things I want while we watch and he gets to have someone to watch it with.
Ah, marriage! The things you'll do for love! :)

Believe it or not, I hadn't watched AI until this year. I was stupefied at the first elimination show I saw. I couldn't believe it took two hours to do it. I'm with you - it's boring.
Ha ha! Honestly I have never seen more than a few minutes of this show. From those few minutes that I did see, I must admit that I was not really impressed either. Perhaps I should watch a full episode then I can tell you if I completely agree :-)
